“Convocation is a rite of passage and celebratory ceremony where degrees are conferred upon graduating students who have been found worthy in learning and have conducted themselves in line with the extant rules and regulations governing conduct in the university.”
“Today, we are gathered here for the convocation of graduates for the 2019/2020 and 2021/2022 academic sessions.
“It is important to remind ourselves that the 2020/2021 academic session was altogether canceled due to the ASUU strike and the global COVID-19 pandemic, which literally brought the whole world to its knees for over eight months, thereby halting social, political, and economic activities across the globe.”
According to him, the Federal University Gusau held its last combined 1st and 2nd convocation ceremonies for the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic sessions on the 25th of January 2020, and a total number of 685 graduates participated in the ceremony.
“In today’s convocation, the university is graduating a total number of 2,534 students, which is 27.03% higher than the number graduated in the last convocation.”
He explained that the Faculty of Humanities has graduated 196 students, the Faculty of Education 634 students, the Faculty of Science 1,195 students, while the Faculty of Management & Social Sciences graduated 509 students in the combined graduation ceremonies for the 2019/2020 & 2021/2022 academic sessions.
“The general summary of class of degrees obtained by the graduating students shows that 43 students obtained a First-Class degree, 676 Second-Class Upper, 1,737 Second-Class Lower, while 78 others are in the Third-Class degree category.”
The VC disclosed that under his stewardship as the third substantive Vice-Chancellor of FUGUS, with the management team, they have recorded modest achievements.
“On staff training and development, our efforts led to the lifting of the earlier suspension of the fund’s embargo on the university. It is on record that about 95% of the applications for research funding by staff of the university were approved and supported by the TETFund.”
“Through our concerted efforts with my management, we were able to commence postgraduate studies at the university.”
“On academic scholarship, a total of 190 staff of the university have benefited from TETFund interventions ranging from Institution-Based Research to Academic Manuscript Book, Academic Research Journal (ARJ), National Research Fund, and FUGUS Research Centre had sponsored many staff for training through workshop attendance.”
“We recorded progress in completing nine (9) projects namely: New ICT Center, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences, Directorate of Academic Planning Building, Lecture Rooms Block ‘D’, Lecture Rooms Block ‘E’, Department of Biological Sciences, Research Laboratories, Visiting Scholars’ Transit Camp,” he mentioned.
