The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) is set to honour 519 students graduating with First-Class honours during its combined 34th and 35th convocation ceremonies.
This announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, at a press briefing marking the commencement of the convocation events.
Professor Oladiji revealed that the university, which currently has about 20,000 students enrolled across 11 faculties and 59 accredited programmes, including Open Distance Learning, will confer degrees on a total of 6,405 undergraduate students.
Among them, 519 will graduate with First-Class honours, 3,408 with Second-Class Upper Division, 2,139 with Second-Class Lower Division, and 339 with Third-Class degrees.
In addition to undergraduate degrees, FUTA will confer Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees on 960 postgraduate students.
The breakdown includes 299 Postgraduate Diplomas, 536 Master’s degrees, 2 Master of Philosophy degrees, 3 Master of Philosophy PhDs, and 120 Doctorates.
“The 34th and 35th Convocation ceremonies begin today and will peak on the 29th and 30th of November with the award of first and postgraduate degrees,” said Professor Oladiji.
She added that FUTA would welcome its Visitor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during the ceremonies.
“It will be an opportunity to physically express our gratitude for various interventions of the federal government in our university, especially, the approval for the establishment of FUTA Teaching Hospital.”
The Vice-Chancellor also announced the convocation lecture titled “Technological Innovations: A Panacea for Insecurity,” to be delivered by Hon. (Dr.) Olubunmi Tun Ojo, Minister of Interior, on Friday, 29 November 2024, at the Obafemi Awolowo Auditorium.
Highlighting the university’s achievements, Oladiji noted FUTA’s ranking as the 7th best university in Nigeria and the top University of Technology in the country, a status it has maintained for two decades, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025.
She added, “FUTA scholars got 40 Citations in the World’s Top 2 per cent Scientists List, confirming our position as a leading research-intensive institution with global relevance. Ten academic staff were featured in the Career-long Impact Category and 30 in the Single Year Impact Category of the Elsevier/Stanford University ranking.”
During the concluded academic session, FUTA researchers secured international grants worth GBP 135,420 and USD 882,000, as well as national research funding, including NGN 427,000,000 from the TETFund National Research Fund and NGN 2,600,000 from other sources.
The university will also confer Honorary Doctoral degrees on three distinguished individuals: Professor Daniel Olukoya (Doctor of Management Science), Mr. Ayorinde Ogunruku (Doctor of Management Science), and Mr. Joel Ogunsola (Doctor of Information and Communications Technology).
