Students at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State have closed the school in protest over a tuition hike of more than 100% implemented by the administration.
Early on Monday morning, the undergraduate students gathered at the university’s main entrance. They were spotted waving banners with various inscriptions and chanting songs of unity.
A circular earlier released by the institution’s management showed that the tuition was raised from N29,000 to N131,000 for the old students while the fee was raised from N108,000 to N240,000 for fresh students.
Students expressed their concerns about the development by vowing to stop academic activity on campus starting on Monday.
To prevent a breakdown in law and order, heavily armed security forces, including members of the Nigeria Police Force, State Security Service (SSS), and Federal Road Safety Corps, are currently stationed at strategic locations on the school premises.
