Group condemns destruction of school property in Jigawa,

DUSTE (Sundiata Scholar ) – A group, the Youth and Civil Society Advocacy for Development (YOCSAD), has condemned the destruction of property by protesting students of Federal Government College Kiyawa, in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa.

This is contained in a statement by the YOCSAD National President, Mr Aminu Aminu and made available to newsmen by the state Coordinator, Mr Abdulrashid Zareku in Dutse on Sunday.

Aminu condemned the act of vandalism and destruction of property recently perpetrated by some students of Federal Government College Kiyawa.

“The students, in a misguided response to a dispute with the school management over food and cooking utensils, resorted to destroying newly built facilities, including a renovated female hostel, new male hostel, and a kitchen, worth about N129 million.

“These facilities were generously provided by a philanthropist, Dr Halima Zakari, through her foundation, NANA Halima Initiative.

“Such actions are not only unacceptable, but also detrimental to the educational environment and the future prospects of the students themselves.

“The destruction of the facilities undermined the goodwill and efforts of philanthropists like Zakari, who invested in the development of the school to improve the learning conditions for the students,” Aminu said.

He, therefore, called on the school authority to conduct a thorough investigation and take immediate action against those found responsible for the destruction of the school property.

He also urged the school authority and the philanthropist to work together to restore the damaged facilities to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

“We recommend that the school administration engage in dialogue with the students to address any grievances and work towards a resolution that does not involve violence or destruction of property.

“We also appeal to Zakari and her likes not to be discouraged by this act of vandalism,” he said.

Aminu equally appealed to other stakeholders, including parents, guardians and the community, to condemn the act and support efforts to promote a culture of respect for educational institutions and their facilities.

He urged the students to focus on their studies and seek peaceful and constructive ways to resolve grievances. (NAN)
