Group criticises Reps over proposed Bola Ahmed Tinubu University

The leader of the Team Nwawelugo Movement, Chief Ikechukwu C Anonye, has slammed the national assembly for considering establishing a university in the name of the country’s current president, despite the harsh economy and hardships that citizens are facing.

In a statement to journalists, he described the action as a misplaced priority, claiming that instead of focusing on how to address insecurity, skyrocketing inflation, and unreasonable fuel price increase, lawmakers were working on a non-essential project.

He noted that the National Assembly’s support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu University at this important stage in Nigerian history has raised eyebrows.

Part of his statement in part reads: “It’s being perceived as an attempt to curry favor from the president especially considering the country’s pressing challenges. While the country is grappling with numerous issues, many are questioning the timing and priorities of the National Assembly”.

He cited some of the worries about the move as economic. He explained that Nigeria is facing serious economic challenges, and devoting resources to construct an institution named after the president may not be the most prudent decision.

On education, he stated that the country’s school sector is already dealing with many issues, including inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, and poor teacher welfare.

He believes that the action is intended to satisfy the president rather than address the nation’s pressing needs and that it is critical to prioritise the country’s well-being and address the underlying issues affecting Nigerians.

He advised that the national assembly should focus on draughting legislation that serves the country as a whole, rather than pursuing activities that may be perceived as self-serving or sycophantic.
