Gunmen kill one, kidnap university student in Kebbi

The Kebbi State command of the Nigerian Police Force has confirmed the kidnapping of a 400-level student from the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, during an early morning attack on Tuesday at Istijaba Villa, a student lodge located off-campus in Unguwar Jeji, Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

According to a press release issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the abducted student has been identified as Augustine Madubiya, a 23-year-old final-year Economics undergraduate. He was reportedly taken at about 3 am when the kidnappers invaded the hostel compound.

The statement revealed, “Tragically, a good Samaritan, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was nearby attending to his cattle and attempted to intervene, was fatally shot during the incident.

“He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” the statement partly read.

Additionally, the statement noted that the Divisional Police Officer in Kalgo responded quickly by deploying a team of officers to the scene as soon as the report was received.

It continued: “The command is following credible leads, and a combined team of security personnel is actively combing the surrounding forest areas to ensure the safe rescue of the victim and the arrest of those behind this despicable act,” the statement added.

The police have given their assurance to the public of their dedication to restoring peace and holding the offenders accountable.
