Hoodlums attack UNILAG bus conveying graduation gowns
The post-graduate academic gowns of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), which were paid for and were meant to be given to the graduating students, were stolen off a bus.
This week marks the 54th convocation event for the university, where 340 graduates will receive first-class degree certificates.
It was required of the graduates to pay N15,000 in order to pick up their gowns.
After a protracted wait, a large number of students who were supposed to pick up their academic gowns expressed dissatisfaction with the school’s incapacity to supply them.
In a terse text message and mail sent to post-graduate students, the management of the University School of Post-Graduate Studies (SPGS) said: “Dear graduate, we regret to inform you that the distribution of SPGS academic gowns is now suspended.
“Sadly, the remaining gowns were stolen, and our bus vandalised this afternoon.
”Writing on X, a lawyer, Malachy Odo, also said he received the same notice from the school via text messages after he had paid the levy meant for the gown collection.
“I paid 15k for convocation gown yesterday and this is what UNILAG just sent me. This country is not a real place.”
