Bashir Aliyu, the councillor for Achika Ward in Kano State’s Wudil Local Government Area, has sponsored 120 out-of-school children to attend secondary school.
Aliyu, who presented school materials to the orphaned children during a ceremony conducted on Sunday in Achika Ward, stated that the gesture was intended to secure their future.
He stated that the beneficiaries would be enrolled in Achika’s Government Junior Secondary School and Government Arabic Junior Secondary School.
He stated that he would finance the beneficiaries’ education from junior to senior secondary school levels, “even if I am no longer holding any political office.”
The Councillor noted that the gesture was his contribution toward the development of Kano State through the empowerment of “the vulnerable and the downtrodden.”
According to him, the initiative will secure the future of the children, especially the orphans who nowadays find it difficult to realise their educational dreams.
He said the beneficiaries included 65 girls and 54 boys, adding that about 50 of them are drop-outs.
“I will continue to look after these children until they graduate from secondary school. Empowering children like these, all of them orphans, is a great service to humanity.
“They need the society’s support in order to be good and productive members of the society. Abandoning them would be dangerous.
“That is why I decided to sponsor their education from junior up to senior secondary school level even if I am no longer holding a political appointment,” Aliyu said.
Items he distributed to the beneficiaries included 1,200 exercise books, 120 bags, 240 sets of uniforms, 120 pairs of shoes, 120 pairs of socks, 240 pens and 240 pieces of pencils.
