Kano University Shuts Down Female Hostel Over Immoral Acts, Security Concerns

The authorities at Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) have issued a directive for the immediate shutdown of the Al-Ansar Indabo female students’ hostels situated at Hotoro and UDB Road in Kano due to disciplinary and safety-related issues.
This decision was made public through a statement released on Monday by Dr. Hamza Garba, Vice President, Campus Life.
Additionally, the university declared it had revoked the approval previously granted for the use of the hostels following alleged breaches of the institution’s “code of conduct”.
The university clarified that the move was part of broader efforts by MAAUN to maintain accommodation that is “safe, secure, and morally upright” for its students.
The statement read, “I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students’ hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro.”
Garba emphasized that the hostels had violated MAAUN’s operational rules for privately managed student housing.
He further stated that these breaches had resulted in various issues, such as confirmed instances of “immoral behaviour”, poor access to water and electricity, incidents of student violence, unapproved nighttime activities, and shared spaces with “unknown tenants”.
“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students,” he said.
The university, therefore, instructed that all students residing in the affected hostels must leave the premises immediately following the completion of the current semester’s examinations, warning them not to return for their “own safety and security”.
“Management is working closely with relevant security agencies to ensure total compliance with the directive,” the statement added.
Both students and parents were urged to reach out to the Office of the Vice President, Campus Life, using the official email — “vp-campuslife@maaun.edu.ng” — to receive information about secure and university-approved housing options.
MAAUN also cautioned that it would not be held liable for any outcomes stemming from students’ failure to adhere to the directive.
