Kogi Polytechnic withdraws 273 students over poor results, expels 6

Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja has withdrawn 273 students due to poor academic results and also expelled six others for engaging in examination-related offenses.

This was stated in a press release issued on Monday by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, and shared with journalists in Lokoja.

The statement noted that these decisions were part of the outcomes reached during the 120th Academic Board meeting held on Thursday, April 17, in the Polytechnic’s Board Room on the main campus in Lokoja.

Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, who chairs the Board, praised the Academic Board Result Verification Committee headed by Deputy Rector Dr. Samuel Taiwo Olowo for their meticulous work on the students’ results and encouraged them to continue with the same level of commitment.

However, he voiced concern over the poor performance of some students, which resulted in their removal, even though the school had ensured a learning-friendly environment.

The affected students were from 20 departments and 42 academic programmes.

In a separate action, the institution has expelled six students found guilty of cheating during exams and other similar violations.

The Board approved the expulsion after reviewing the findings of the Central Examination Misconduct Committee, chaired by Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Ehimony.

Professor Usman acknowledged the thorough efforts of the Central Examination Misconduct Committee along with the committees in individual schools and departments. He also encouraged continued collaboration among the committees to ensure strong decisions that maintain the Polytechnic’s academic standards.

The Rector reiterated that both the Board and Management remain committed to implementing reforms that would bring lasting improvements to the institution.

The Board Chairman, while appreciating members for their ongoing support, used the occasion to advise students to take full advantage of the school’s supportive academic environment and stay committed to their studies.

Furthermore, the students who have been withdrawn or expelled have been instructed to return all property belonging to the Polytechnic, including their identity cards, to the Security Unit before leaving the institution.
