Kwara, Oyo Postpone BECE Following Buhari’s Death

The governments of Kwara and Oyo states have announced the postponement of the Basic Education Certificate Examination, which was originally slated for Tuesday, 15 July 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In separate press statements released on Tuesday, the education ministries of both states explained that the rescheduling was due to the public holiday declared by the Federal Government to mourn the passing of the late Nigerian president.
In Kwara State, the BECE has been moved to Thursday, 17 July 2025, while Oyo State has postponed its examination indefinitely.
According to a statement by the Press Secretary of the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Peter Amogbonjaye, “This postponement is due to the public holiday earlier declared by the Federal Government in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.”
The statement urged students, parents, guardians, and school administrators to take note of the changes in the examination schedule.
“The ministry regrets any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciates the continued cooperation and understanding of all stakeholders,” the statement said.
In a separate statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, stated, “The decision was taken in line with the public holiday declared by the Federal Government in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who recently passed away.”
He further added, “The affected subjects, Mathematics and Pre-Vocational Studies, have been postponed until further notice.”
Olayiwola called on students, parents, and other stakeholders to take note of this update and assured them that all other scheduled examination papers starting from Wednesday, 16 July 2025, would proceed as planned.
