MAAUN Receives NUC Approval to Run Medicine, Architecture, Other Programmes
The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano has received official accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to launch programmes in medicine, architecture, and other disciplines.
The announcement was made by Dr Habeeb Awaisu, Vice President of Administration, during a guided tour of the institution for participants in the PRNigeria Young Communication Fellowship.
According to Dr Awaisu, the NUC has approved the university’s Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) programme, along with degree courses in Architecture and Quantity Surveying under the School of Environmental Sciences. Additionally, the university’s Law programme had earlier been accredited.
The NUC’s approval followed a thorough evaluation of the university’s resources, including its modern facilities, academic materials, and highly qualified staff.
Dr Awaisu remarked, “This approval showcases MAAUN’s determination to deliver high-quality education, backed by state-of-the-art facilities and a team of experienced lecturers. There are now 22 undergraduate programmes, spanning social sciences, health, law, and medicine.”
MAAUN offers a range of academic programmes. The School of Social & Management Sciences includes courses such as Accounting, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Human Resources Management, International Relations, Mass Communication, and Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. The School of Computing provides degrees in Computer Science, Cyber Security, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Science, and Information Systems. The School of Health Sciences encompasses programmes like Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLS), Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT), and Public Health. Furthermore, the School of Nursing Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Science.
Dr Musa Abdullahi Sufi, Coordinator of the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Foundation and a senior lecturer at the university, highlighted that the NUC’s accreditation is “not just a reflection of MAAUN’s growth but also a response to the increasing demand for quality higher education in Nigeria.”
He also emphasised the founder’s belief that education is essential for addressing challenges in Northern Nigeria, stating, “By equipping our youth with knowledge, we can tackle the multifaceted challenges confronting our nation.”
Yushau Shuaib, CEO of Image Merchants Promotion Limited, praised MAAUN for maintaining high academic standards. He described the NUC’s endorsement as a testament to the university’s commitment to providing world-class education.
Shuaib further remarked, “This milestone signifies another important step in the school’s mission to provide quality education while addressing regional and national challenges through innovative academic programmes.”
