KANO (Sundiata Scholar) – The MTN Foundation Science and Technology Laboratory Project aims to enhance science education and boost technological advancement among school children, an official has said.
The Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation, Odunaya Sanya, said this on Tuesday at the inauguration of four remodelled and equipped laboratories in Government Girls College, Dala, Kano State.
reports that the laboratories are meant for science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Agricultural Science.
Sanya explained that the MTNF Science & Technology Laboratory Project focused on renovating and equipping science laboratories at the college.
She said the project also included providing training for teachers and laboratory attendants, and ultimately enhancing the teaching and learning experience in key science subjects.
According to her, the MTNF Science & Technology Laboratory Project aims to enhance science education in public secondary schools in Nigeria.
“In the current phase, Phase Three, six schools with 28 laboratories were renovated across six states in the country between 2023 and 2024.
“In the previous phases (Phases One and Two), the laboratories for the three science subjects—Physics, Chemistry, and Biology—were remodelled and renovated.
“For this current phase, Phase Three, the Agricultural Science laboratory is also included.
“The Foundation is renovating the Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Agricultural Science laboratories of six public secondary schools across six states in the country.
“In addition to laboratories, the foundation installed laboratory furniture, solar-powered borehole, and alternative power solution, supplied laboratory equipment and consumables.”
She said that the foundation spent over N190 million to renovate and equip the four Laboratories.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Abubakar Mahmud, SAN, said that the school was chosen for the second phase of the foundation’s intervention project because it fulfilled all the criteria required by the foundation.
According to him, the foundation determined to improve the study of Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among female students in public schools.
In his remarks, Alhaji Umar Doguwa, Kano State Commissioner for Education, applauded the foundation for the gesture, noting that the foundation complemented the present administration’s efforts to improve the quality of education.
“We thank MTN Nigeria for choosing Government Girls Secondary School, Dala, because is one of the best and historic schools in the city,” he said.
Doguwa, who said that the state was open to further partnerships, called on other individuals and corporate organisations to emulate MTNF.
The Principal of the school, Ramatu Muktar, commended MTN for prioritising the education of Kano students, particularly GGSS Dala, adding that the laboratories would act as a catalyst for development.
The principal, who is also an Alumni of the school, promised that the management of the school would safeguard and make good use of the laboratories.(NAN)
