NAUS urges FG to reduce hardship faced by students and citizens

Under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian University Students (NAUS), students in Nigerian universities have called on the federal government to take immediate action in order to lessen the hardship that the high cost of living places both on students and other citizens of the nation.

In a statement signed by the Deputy Senate President of NAUS, Comrade Alade Abayomi, the students noted that: “It is with deep concern that we bring to your attention the widespread suffering experienced by countless Nigerians across the nation.

“The current economic situation, marked by inflation, unemployment, and a general decline in living standards, has created immense difficulties for families and individuals trying to make ends meet.

“The escalating cost of essential commodities, such as food, housing, healthcare and transportation, has placed an unbearable burden on the shoulders of ordinary Nigerians and affecting the educational system too.

“Many are struggling to afford even the most necessities, while others are forced to make difficult choices between feeding their families and meeting other critical needs.

“In the light of these dire circumstances, we implore the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to alleviate the suffering of Nigerian Students and citizens. Concrete steps must be taken to cushion the impact of the high cost of living and provide relief to those most affected by economic hardship.”

The Statement further read: “We urge the government to consider measures of Implementing targeted subsidies or price controls on education, transportation and essential goods to make them more affordable for the average Nigerian. Introducing social welfare programmes to assist vulnerable populations, including low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.”

The students also offered the following suggestions to the Federal Government: “Investing in infrastructure development to improve access to basic services such as electricity, water, and transportation, thereby reducing the cost of living.

“Creating employment opportunities through initiatives such as job training programmes, vocational education, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.

“Strengthening anti-corruption efforts and promoting transparency and accountability in governance to ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“We urge you to heed this call for action and work tirelessly to implement measures that will bring relief to Nigerian students and the whole citizens.”
