New Bill; Lecturers who Harass Students to be Jailed for 14 Years

A bill that tends to jail randy lecturers found guilty of abusing and sexually harassing female undergraduate students in tertiary institutions has been passed by the Nigerian senate.

The bill titled:

New Bill; Lecturers who Harass Students to be Jailed for 14 Years

  ‘A Bill for an Act to prevent, prohibit and redress Sexual Harassment of students in tertiary educational institutions and for matters concerned therewith, 2019’, Was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President. Ovie Omo-Agege, and 106 other senators.

The bill according to the senators is geared towards promoting and maintaining ethical standard in higher institutions and protecting students who maybe victims of sexual harassment.

A 14 years jail term with a minimum of 5 years without an option of fine for any educator who commits sexual offenses in tertiary institutions was proposed as punisment to those found guilty.

The bill also covers other forms of harassment such as grabbing, hugging, kissing, rubbing, stroking, touching, pinching the breasts or hair or lips or hips or buttocks or any other sensitive part of the body of a student.

Students who falsely accuse educators or lecturers of harassment, risk being expelled and  institutional disciplinary actions would be activated against female students who harass lecturers through their mood of dressing.
