NUC approves second state-owned university in Kwara




The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of Kwara State University of Education in Ilorin.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the institution is the second state-owned and funded university, following Kwara State University, Malete, which was established in 2009.

On Tuesday, the Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, presented a letter of honour to Kayode Alabi, Deputy Governor of Kwara, in Abuja. He praised the state for its foresight.

According to Maiyaki, the university will be the 64th state-owned and 274th in the Nigerian University System.

Maiyaki applauded Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazak for the effort, stating that the institution will handle the difficulties of increased demand for university education.

‘”I write on behalf of NUC. that with effect from Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Kwara State University of Education Ilorin is recognised as the 64th state-owned university and 274th University in Nigeria.

“The approval is consequent upon the receipt of your letter dated July 15, notifying NUC of the establishment of Kwara State University of Education, Ilorin, ” he said

According to Maiyaki, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have all been notified of the University’s establishment.

On his part, the Deputy Governor assured NUC of adequate funding of the university to benefit Nigerian students.

He said that the state government had developed a solid master plan, academic brief, and enabling university law to ensure the institution’s smooth launch.
