NYSC promotes effective public speaking among Katsina students




KASTINA (Sundiata Scholar) – Members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Editorial Board Community Development Service (CDS) group, in Katsina, have lectured students on effective public communication.

The literacy programme, designed to create awareness among secondary school students was held on Monday at the Women Teachers’ College (WTC) Katsina.

reports that the programme was to unlock their power of effective public communication, especially through speaking, reading and writing.

The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Sa’idu Ibrahim, said the programme aimed at enhancing the students’ literacy level and overall academic performance.

Ibrahim, represented by the Zonal Inspector, Katsina zone, Alhaji Abdullazeez Tanko, said literacy encompassed different qualities in human beings which include expression of oneself in the adopted or accepted language.“

Especially like English language in the case of Nigeria, writing in the accepted symbols and skills, as well as reading out what has been written to the comprehension of the listeners,” he said.

Ibrahim further called on the school authorities, teachers and students to always create time and attend such programmes in view of its benefit.

He enjoined stakeholders to always tap from the corps members’ wealth of intelligence by encouraging them to carry out educational projects in their host communities.

Earlier, the President of the Editorial Board Community Development Service (CDS) group, corps member Afolayan Ayooluwa-Funmilayo said they observed that most secondary school students in the state lacked confidence to speak english in public.

The group’s president suggested that students should be encouraged to be reading novels, listening to radio, television news and programmes and involve in academic school programmes like drama, speech writing and reading.

According to her, if the students are engaged in such educational programmes, it will enhance their literacy and effective use of English language.

The school’s Vice Principal Academics I, Mr Shehu Sani, appreciated the group and the NYSC for choosing the college for the programme.

He thanked the corps members for the educational programme and promised to always support them for similar projects. (NAN)
