OAU Dental Student Commits Suicide After Release of Exam Result

The Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) confirmed the passing of one of its members, who allegedly ended his life shortly after examination results were made public.

According to the statement signed by IFUDSA President, Adebayo Idris, the group expressed that the occurrence was a heartbreaking loss.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry. We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results,” the statement read.

“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face. As an association, we are devastated, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and all who knew him.”

The organisation observed that the incident might leave many people stunned and appealed to students to seek assistance and support one another.

“We understand that this tragedy will leave many in shock, with questions and emotions that may be difficult to process,” it said.

“We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”

The statement also restated IFUDSA’s dedication to promoting student welfare and mental health initiatives.

“We also reaffirm our commitment to advocating for improved student welfare and mental health support within the association so that such tragedies can be prevented in the future,” the statement added.

In a similar occurrence in 2021, a 200-level Accounting student of the university, identified as Emmanuel, reportedly took his own life after consuming pesticide.

He had allegedly informed his friends of his intention before ingesting the substance.

The young man was taken to the hospital by ambulance but was declared dead on arrival.

Likewise, in August 2019, the institution mourned the death of another student, Opeyemi Grace Dara, from the Department of English and Literature.

She was said to have died by suicide after taking pesticide.

Although initial reports linked Dara’s action to her examination results, the university’s management later clarified that her academic performance was not poor enough to justify such a decision.
