OAU Research Team to hold validation workshop on how to end sexual and gender-based violence on campuses on Tuesday




A dissemination/validation workshop on research on ways to reduce Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) at Nigerian tertiary institutions will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The research is being carried out by a team of Dons from the University, with Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, former Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode, as Principal Investigator.

Prof Obilade, of the University’s Department of Adult Education and Lifelong Learning, leads a team of eight erudite researchers, including Prof Olutoyin Mejiuni, also of the Adult Education and Lifelong Learning Department, and OAU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation, and Development, Prof. Akanni Akinyemi.

Other co-researchers include Dr. Oluwatoyin O.Ilesanmi of Redeemers University, Ede, Dr. Lanre Ikuteyijo of OAU’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Dr. Bisola Adebayo of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

The remaining members are Dr. Oyeyemi Bukola Babalola and Mr. Tope Aborisade, both from the Department of Psychology at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife.

According to a release from the OAU Research Team working on the project, the dissemination/validation workshop will be held at the African Centre for Excellence Annex on campus.

Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, is anticipated to attend the session, which is set to begin at 10 a.m.

According to the organisers, Tetfund is sponsoring the research.

The primary objective of the research project was to conduct a situation analysis of sexual and gender-based violence at various levels of Nigerian higher education institutions and propose solutions for zero SGBV tolerance on campuses.

According to them, the goal is to promote a safe and conducive learning environment for students, especially the females who are often the victims.
