OCP Africa, a subsidiary of phosphate manufacturer OCP Group, has pledged N10 million to the Brightest University Fund, a crowdfunding campaign that supports outstanding agricultural science students in Nigeria.
According to a statement, the contribution takes the project closer to its N100 million goal of offering scholarships to the top 81 students who emerged from a nationwide qualifying exam.
“The scholarships will be distributed transparently based on the student’s performance in a 13-week televised competition,” the statement said.
“Our mission includes supporting the study and practice of agriculture in Nigeria,” said Oluwatoba Asana, OCP Africa Nigeria Country Manager.
“This contribution will help change young people’s perception of agricultural science and its vital role in human existence.”
OCP Africa’s investment aligns with its broader commitment to sustainable agricultural development across Africa.
By equipping young Nigerians with the necessary knowledge and skills, they aim to address pressing agricultural and environmental challenges.
“This N10 million donation confirms OCP Africa’s dedication to education and youth empowerment,” said Oladapo Ojo, executive producer of the Brightest National Agricultural Science Quiz Contest.
“It sets a strong precedent for Africa’s first educational crowdfunding initiative, creating life-changing opportunities for future agricultural leaders.”
The company added that the Brightest National Agricultural Science Quiz Contest aims to stimulate students’ interest in developing technological solutions for large-scale food production and preservation in Africa.
“Over 16,000 students participated, with the top 81 now vying for scholarships. The competition will be broadcast on various channels across Nigeria and Africa starting April 6th, 2024,” it disclosed.
