Ogun State closes school, suspends principal after student’s death
The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-emi, following the tragic death of Master Monday Arijo, a Senior Secondary 2 student, reportedly due to corporal punishment administered by a teacher.
This decision comes after the teacher allegedly responsible was arrested and subsequently suspended.
The school’s Principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has also been suspended after receiving a formal query for permitting corporal punishment in defiance of state regulations.
Governor Dapo Abiodun directed the school’s closure and ordered an investigative panel to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding this incident. He assured that anyone found culpable following the investigation would face legal consequences.
Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, along with other officials, visited the student’s family to extend their condolences. This delegation included the Director of Secondary and Higher Education, Principals General of the Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer for Imeko Afon, ANCOPPS representatives, the Trade Union Congress Ogun State President, and the ASSUS Ogun State Chairman. During their visit, they expressed sincere sympathy and reiterated the state government’s support for the grieving family.
