Ogun student dies after alleged punishment of 162 frog jumps, flogging
Ariyo Monday, a pupil at Obafemi Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, died after allegedly being put to 162 frog jumps and flogged by his teacher.
In a video released by activist JustAdetoun, the incident started when a teacher brought a trash can to class and instructed students to handle it gently.
Ariyo joked that the trash can was bought with student money, which infuriated the teacher. Following this, the teacher reportedly talked with the principal, who approved the punishment.
According to JustAdetoun, Ariyo received 164 cane strokes before collapsing.
According to the footage, Ariyo, who was on a drip in a hospital bed, was groaning and struggling to communicate.
Omolola Odutola, a police spokesperson, acknowledged the incident but stated that the punishment included 24 cane strokes and 162 frog jumps.
According to Odutola, the student died at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, and his body is now at the Ayetoro Mortuary for an autopsy.
She said, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday].”
