Olympiad: LASG applauds students’ ingenuity, pledges more computers for schools




Lagos, (Sundiata Scholar) – The Lagos State Government has commended the winners of the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) finals for junior and senior secondary schools for their ingenuity and creativity in robot building.

Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, made the commendation in a statement signed by Mr Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.Alli-Balogun said that the significance of science education for school children at an early stage could not be overemphasised.

He said that the winners were from Lagos State Senior Model College, Meiran and New Era Girls Junior Secondary School, Surulere.“The two schools edged out other 50 schools that participated in the competition at both preliminary and the finals.“The significance of science education for school children at an early stage cannot be overemphasised.“

I commend the school teachers, who doubled as coaches for their various schools, and the ingenuity and creativity of the students in robot building was displayed at both preliminary and finals of the competition,”

he said.Alli-Balogun assured the students of the state government’s plan to provide more computers in public schools to ensure an increased spread of digital learning and skills among pupils and students.According to him, the administration of Gov.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu will continue to invest in education and 21st century technology as enunciated in the THEMES+ Agenda.

The commissioner said that in addition to receiving trophies and other prizes, the two schools would represent Nigeria at the WRO scheduled to hold in the city of Izmir, Turkey in November.

Earlier, Mr Eniola Opeyemi, the Senior Special Assistant to Gov. Sanwo-Olu on Basic and Secondary Education, urged the students to put in more efforts and sharpen their critical thinking and problem solving skills by using robots.He commended Gov.

Sanwo-Olu for the opportunity given to the students to explore technology at the early stage of their lives.It would be recalled that Robot Olympiad competition is an annual event organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The event helps students exhibit their learning through practical demonstrations and increase their curiosity and enthusiasm for technology and robotics.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Earth Allies” and the various school teams explored through robots how nature and natural events could affect humans.

Other winners in the state final include Akoka Junior High School, Bariga and Okesuna Junior High School, Lagos Island with trophies for the second and third position.

While the senior category had Ojo Senior High School, Ojo, and Lagos City College, Sabo, Yaba, who occupied the second and third positions respectively. (NAN)
