President Tinubu Approves the Upgrade of YABATECH to a University

President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the long-anticipated upgrade of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to a university.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed this development on Friday while speaking with the institution’s management during his visit.

“I discussed this with President Tinubu, and he approved it without hesitation. I am now awaiting the official memo and necessary protocols,” he stated.

The minister pointed out that YABATECH, which has more than 200 staff members with doctorate degrees, is well-qualified to become a university.

“This institution is a legacy. With over 200 staff members holding doctorate degrees, it is more than ready to attain university status,” he added.

Alausa acknowledged YABATECH’s dedication to excellence, stressing that innovation and technology are essential for growth, with the government’s full backing.

“I commend your pursuit of excellence. Innovation and investment in technology are key to development, and the Federal Government will support you,” he assured.

Nevertheless, he urged YABATECH to emphasize innovation and vocational skills in its curriculum, aligning with international best practices.

Alausa reiterated the government’s dedication to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), and Entrepreneurship as critical fields for national development.

“We need to reshape our country, and YABATECH must key into technology again,” he stated.

“Over 70% of our population consists of youths, and we must equip them with technical skills. Developing these skills is crucial for national progress,” he added.

He also criticized Nigeria’s excessive focus on white-collar jobs, which he said has resulted in a high rate of youth unemployment.

“We must change this narrative,” he stressed.

The minister encouraged the institution to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, and Coding into its academic programs.

“If our youths excel in these fields, they can work remotely and earn foreign exchange.

“There are over 685,000 jobs available in Tech and Software Development. I challenge YABATECH to drive innovation and provide education that supports manufacturing and technology.

“This will strengthen the private sector, which in turn will drive societal growth. We must support President Bola Tinubu in moving the nation forward,” he said.

Alausa praised YABATECH’s Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, for his leadership in endowment fund projects and suggested the establishment of a strong alumni endowment office to encourage financial contributions.

He also urged YABATECH to collaborate with industries to commercialize its research innovations, stating, “Universities abroad thrive on endowment.”

YABATECH’s Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, expressed his support for the decision, reaffirming the institution’s dedication to enhancing academic standards with the necessary government assistance.

“We aim to be a university of technical and vocational education, driving innovation and solving societal challenges for national advancement,” he added.

Likewise, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Funso Afolabi, appreciated the minister’s visit and appealed for support in meeting the institution’s needs.

The proposed bill that will formalize the college’s new status and name is expected to be forwarded to the National Assembly for approval and presidential endorsement.
