The Senate approved a bill to construct a Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State.
This came after the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND’s report on university establishments was adopted in plenary session on Tuesday.
Senator Mohammed Muntari, the chairman, presented the report.
Muntari stated in his presentation that stakeholders who attended the public hearing on the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna state, supported the bill’s passage.
He stated that the school would contribute scientific knowledge to the betterment and resolution of environmental hazards, as well as expose students to professional studies in technology.
“The hallmark of the proposed Federal University of Applied Sciences, is to produce graduates well equipped with practical and theoretical grounded knowledge in technology, applied science, commerce and management.
“This will reduce risks and challenges of productivity, data and information, cost benefits, marketing and security bedeviling humanity.
“The establishment of the Federal University will reduce the ills around the national economy and de-escalate chances of entrenching heinous criminal activities being perpetrated by men of the underworld.
“The knowledge and skills that would be acquired by the graduates from the envisaged Act of the National Assembly will definitely go a long way in expanding and deepening the horizon of the graduates in information management,” he said.
Similarly, he said the varsity will consequently improve national integration and general social progress of the multicultural, young people of this country with yearning and aspiration to acquire skills in information, economic and science management.
He encouraged the Senate to review and approve the report for the good of mankind and Nigeria as a whole.
In the same spirit, the Senate approved a measure in plenary to create the Federal University of Technology Ilaro in Ogun state.
The passage followed the adoption of a report by the committee on tertiary institutions and TETFUND.
In his remarks, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio thanked the lawmakers for their contributions in ensuring passage of the bills.
He stated that if President Bola Tinubu signs the two bills into law, the institutions will contribute to the country’s knowledge, enhance food production, and positively assist the nation’s progress.
