Sokoto varsity’s in-house unions laud govt. for salary increase, entitlements’ payments

SOKOTO (Sundiata Scholar) –
Three in-house unions of the Sokoto State University (SSU) have lauded Gov. Ahmad Aliyu, for implementing salary increments in accordance with its agreement with the Federal Government.
The unions – the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) – gave the commendation in a statement on Saturday in Sokoto.
The statement was signed by the unions’ leaders, namely: Dr. Saidu Abubakar, Mr Ismaila Bala and Aminu Mika’ilu respectively.
They called on members to reciprocate the government’s goodwill by rededicating themselves to their duties and fostering increase in service delivery.
“We commend Gov. Aliyu for settling our outstanding allowances and ensuring the payment of the N70,000 national minimum wage to all categories of workers in the state.
“The intervention has significantly enhanced the academic growth and institutional stability of the university,” they said.
The unions further expressed appreciation to the governor for his consistent contribution and support in facilitating the accreditation of the University’s programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The unions emphasised that such interventions had bolstered the institution’s academic standard and reputation.
“We urge the governor to sustain his commitment to the welfare of the state’s civil servants and further appeal to him to ensure the completion of the staff housing projects which has reached an advanced stage of completion.
“Completion of the housing project will enable more staff to reside on campus, breeding a more conducive academic environment for both staff and students.
”We acknowledge the progress recorded so far by the University. The unions credit its remarkable achievements to the solid foundation laid by its Founder, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC Sokoto).
”The university is one of the few in Nigeria to commence academic activities on its permanent site, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities,” the unions said.
recalls that ASUU, SSU Chapter had in February embarked on an industrial action for non-implementation of 25 per cent and 35 per sent salary increment and its consequential adjustment.
The industrial action lasted for a week, and part of the unions’ demands were the payment of arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increment from January 2024 to February 2025.
Other demands comprise payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) for seven academic sessions and outstanding payment of promotion arrears for three academic sessions.
The unions also demanded payment of annual increment for five academic sessions’ outstanding remittances of union’s check-off dues, cooperative deductions and outstanding payments of visiting and sabbatical lecturers mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). (NAN)
