Soludo approves N6.154 billion for Anambra’s basic education projects

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo has approved the release of N6.154 billion as counterpart funding for the state’s Universal Basic Education (UBE) grants covering the years 2022 to 2024.

This information was made known in a statement on Friday by Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, who serves as the Chairperson of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), according to reports from NAN.

Nwadinobi pointed out that this fund release will allow the state to qualify for a matching grant from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

She explained that with the matching contribution, UBEC is expected to release N12.308 billion for a new phase of UBE intervention projects throughout the state.

She noted that the expected projects include the construction of additional classrooms, repairs of existing buildings, and the delivery of desks and chairs to schools.

She also mentioned that water and sanitation systems would be introduced in both primary and junior secondary schools across several communities.

In addition, she said the funds would be used for building school fences, supplying ICT resources, and delivering equipment for agriculture and sports.

“These initiatives are intended to create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning in our schools,” Nwadinobi stated.

She expressed gratitude to the governor, saying that stakeholders recognize his ongoing efforts and dedication to promoting quality education in Anambra.

This progress coincides with Anambra State’s 2025 budget proposal of N606.99 billion, where education has a significant share.

Out of the total, 77% (N467.5 billion) is designated for capital expenditure and 23% (N139.5 billion) for recurrent spending.

“Sectoral increases include education (101.4%), health (57.1%), social services (82.7%), infrastructure (38.9%), and the judiciary (51.3%),” the state government added.

Governor Soludo, while addressing lawmakers in November 2024, assured that education would receive N11 billion for smart schools, N22 billion for institutional upgrades, and N3 billion for student loans in 2025.

“Ministry of Education – Renovation, construction, and equipping of smart schools: N11 billion. Student loan/bursary scheme for students: N3 billion. Developing institutions: N22 billion. Supplementary funds to secondary schools: N1 billion. Transport support for schools: N250 million,” the state government revealed.

In showcasing the achievements of his administration in 2024, Soludo highlighted successes in areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

He referenced the introduction of free education for Senior Secondary 3 students, the employment of 3,115 teachers, and the outfitting of 60 STEM-focused schools.

The governor stressed that the 2025 budget marks a major step toward positioning Anambra as a model of good governance, economic progress, and fairness, through ambitious projects and a strategic plan designed to ensure steady development in the state.
