Prof Florence Banku Obi, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Calabar, has guaranteed that the nationwide strike by members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) will not affect the institution’s 36th convocation.
The VC noted that at its 36th convocation, around 8,415 students will graduate, with 32 receiving First Class degrees and 438 receiving PhDs.
Obi announced this during a news conference in Calabar to outline activities planned for the ceremony on Monday.
The VC stated that her administration launched staff meritorious awards last year, and that 143 staff members were honoured this year, emphasising that the goal of the awards was to push them to be more productive.
Obi stated that the convocation lecture will take place on Thursday, with His Lordship Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Archdiocese, speaking on the topic “Harmonising Diversity for National Development,” followed by a command performance in honour of our Chancellor, including our guest lecturer.
She stated that the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, and several TETFUND employees will commission five projects on Saturday.
The projects that will be commissioned are primarily TETFUND initiatives, with three pavilions and two hostels.
“We also have 3 distinguished Nigerians that we will be honoring with Honorary Doctorate Degrees on that day. They are; Dame Winifred Akpani, CEO Northwest Petroleum and Gas Limited, Chief Dr. Anyanwu Ugochukwu of DCL Laboratory, and Bamijokotola Abike Johnson of Trustee Ecogreen Foundation,” she said.
