SSANU and NASU threaten indefinite strike, issue three-week ultimatum

The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have threatened an indefinite strike over outstanding salaries.

On Wednesday, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi issued a joint statement.

The unions gave the federal government a three-week deadline to pay their outstanding salaries.

According to them, the 10-day grace period given to the Federal Government to pay the four months of outstanding salaries to university staff expired on 26th July 2024.

The unions issued another three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government beginning Tuesday, September 17, to act on their demands or face an indefinite strike.

They threatened to close schools and inter-university centres if payments were not made within the new grace period.

SSANU and NASU are demanding, among other things, the payment of their members’ withheld salaries for four months, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the execution of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.

The unions accused the federal government of failing to act under the initial six-week deadline it imposed in July of this year.
