The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have directed their members to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike in protest against the ongoing issue of withheld salaries. This industrial action affects all members across public universities and inter-university centres nationwide.
In a jointly signed statement by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, the unions expressed profound disappointment in the government’s inaction, despite repeated ultimatums and negotiations. “It is appalling that despite numerous ultimatums, the government has yet to address our concerns, leaving us with no other recourse,” the statement noted.
According to the directives, SSANU and NASU members are instructed to conduct joint congresses at their respective institutions on Monday, October 28, 2024, marking the commencement of a comprehensive and indefinite strike. The statement emphasized that this action will be unwavering, with no concessions allowed, urging all members to fully engage in the effort to secure their rightful entitlements.
The unions further emphasized that the strike reflects not only a demand for immediate payment of withheld salaries but also serves as a response to long-standing grievances that, despite prior efforts to resolve, have been left unaddressed by the authorities.
