Student dies as classroom collapses in Yobe school

An unidentified pupil was reportedly killed on Thursday when a section of a classroom block gave way at the Government Girls Science and Technical College in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe State.

The event reportedly took place during school hours.

According to a report by the Nigeria Television Authority posted on X.com, the students were standing in the classroom corridor when the roof collapsed on them.

An unspecified number of students were also reported injured after being trapped beneath the debris.

Emergency responders later arrived at the scene to assist the victims.

These responders, along with school staff, helped evacuate the students, who were promptly transported to a specialist hospital for medical attention.

In a photo shared by the news outlet, the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Prof Abba Adam, and the Executive Secretary of the state’s Science and Technical Education Board, Dauda Atiyaye, were seen assessing the incident site firsthand.

Reports stated that they also visited the hospital where the injured students were receiving treatment.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the collapse had not yet been established.

The Government Girls’ Science and Technical College Potiskum, founded in 1979, is a public boarding school aimed at promoting girl-child education in Yobe State. It is located approximately 100 kilometres from Damaturu, the state capital.

Meanwhile, a blast occurred at the Chemical Market in Talata-Mafara, Zamfara State, on Tuesday.

The explosion was reportedly caused by the careless disposal of gunpowder residue from a cigarette, sparking a massive fire.

The incident led to extensive damage and left 50 people with varying degrees of injuries.
