Students oppose name change of Ibadan Polytechnic, appeal to Oyo Assembly

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has officially appealed to the Oyo State House of Assembly, requesting a reconsideration of Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent declaration to rename the institution.
This development, which has raised alarm among students, alumni, and other concerned stakeholders, is viewed as a potential threat to the institution’s historic legacy and long-established reputation.
In a letter directed to the House of Assembly and endorsed by the SUG President, Comrade Oladipupo Olamide D, the student body described the governor’s decision as one that could damage the identity and legacy of the institution, which has represented academic excellence for over fifty years.

“The Polytechnic, Ibadan has a rich legacy spanning over 50 years, and its name is synonymous with excellence in education,” the letter reads. “Renaming it would erase its identity and legacy, affecting not only the current students and staff but also the alumni and the entire community.”
The students outlined a number of reasons for opposing the proposed change, including the importance of preserving historical heritage, safeguarding the institution’s identity, and preventing potential negative consequences for alumni and stakeholders.
They also voiced concerns regarding how the renaming could negatively influence the academic reputation and public perception of the school.
The letter emphasised the urgency of the matter, particularly with an upcoming sitting of the House of Assembly, and called on legislators to respond promptly.
“We have expedited this appeal to bring the matter to your attention promptly, seeking your prompt reconsideration and intervention,” the students wrote.
Founded in 1970, The Polytechnic, Ibadan is one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary institutions and occupies a distinguished place in the country’s educational system.
The student union concluded their message with a heartfelt plea: “We appeal that our institution’s name should be retained as The Polytechnic, Ibadan!”
