Students’ union starts mentoring sessions for secondary students in Ilorin
LAGOS (Sundiata Scholar) – The Ilorin Emirate Students Union has commenced career talks and mentoring sessions for senior secondary school students across 100 summer classes in its five local government areas.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National President of the Union, Sheikh Akorede Nurul-Akeem and made available to newsmen on Monday.
Nurul-Akeem said that the programme would feature 20 first-class graduates from various disciplines sharing their experiences and offering guidance to the young learners.
“We are organising these sessions with the intent of exposing students to career opportunities while instilling essential societal values in them.
“The initiative, which spans the five LGAs – Ilorin East, Ilorin West, Ilorin South, Asa, and Moro, seeks to mould young minds, preparing them for academic success.
“It will also prepare them for their future roles as productive and value-driven members of society,” he said.
The union president explained that the Saliu Mustapha Foundation, an NGO founded by Senator Saliu Mustapha, would be providing critical support for the project.
“Mustapha, who represents the Kwara Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, has been a long-time advocate of youth empowerment and education,” he said.
He said that through interactive discussions, the career talks would cover a broad range of topics including career choice, personal development, and the importance of goal setting.
“Students will also be guided on how to navigate challenges in their academic and future professional lives, while maintaining a strong ethical foundation.
Speaking on the initiative, an Education Consultant to the student body, Mrs Fatimoh Dikko, emphasised the long-term benefits of providing early mentorship to students.
In his remarks, Mr Alabi Abdulkareem, an aide to Sen. Mustapha, noted that the future of Nigeria’s communities lay in the hands of the young ones.
Abdulkareem noted that by investing in the growth and development of youths, they were securing the prosperity of Kwara and Nigeria at large. (NAN)
