Students with disabilities seek budget line for inclusive education

KADUNA (Sundiata Scholar) – The Association of Students with Disabilities, Kaduna State University, Kaduna on Wednesday called on the state government to create a budget line for inclusive education that would address their concerns.


Its Public Relations Officer, Halima Usman, made the call during a public hearing on a bill for a law to make provisions for appropriation of funds for 2025.


The event was organised by the State House of Assembly Committee on Appropriations and Implementation .


Yusuf recommended that all the constructions and furnishing of lecture theatres should consider students with disabilities.


She added that assistive devices such as braille machines, computers, magnifying glasses and other mobility aids should be procured.


According to Yusuf, the 2025 proposed budget did not capture specific projects that would address institutional barriers that discriminate and hinder students with disabilities in certain activities within the schools’ premises.


She stated that procurement of school facilities, especially toilets and theatres should be made so that students with disabilities can access them with ease.


Yusuf urged the government to provide for the school campuses to invest in planting trees so as to provide vegetation and protect the learners from the impact of solar radiation.


reports that Gov. Uba Sani had on Monday presented the 2025 proposed budget in the sum of N790 billion to the assembly.


The bill to make provisions for the fund had passed second reading and was referred to the House Committee on Appropriations and Implementation for an in-depth study.
