TETFUND Boss Advocates for University Autonomy

On Saturday, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Mr. Sonny Echono, called on both the Federal and state governments to provide universities with complete autonomy.
Echono made this appeal while delivering a convocation lecture titled “University Autonomy and the Challenge of Quality Tertiary Education in Nigeria” at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, in Ekiti State.
He noted that universities, regarded as ivory towers, have three main responsibilities: teaching, research, and community service.
According to him, these core roles require a certain degree of independence to be carried out effectively.
The TETFUND Executive Secretary stressed that for universities owned by both the Federal and state governments to fulfill their mandates, they must be granted complete autonomy to operate with greater freedom.
Echono clarified that while university autonomy and academic freedom are distinct concepts, both are fundamental to the smooth functioning of universities, ensuring quality education and fostering academic development.
He pointed out that the current government policy on university autonomy still falls short of full independence, as ultimate authority remains with university governing councils.
Echono urged the Federal Government to increase university autonomy to boost infrastructure development and strengthen partnerships with industries, alumni, and other educational bodies.
He emphasized that granting autonomy enables universities to establish stronger networks, upgrade facilities, and collaborate internationally to exchange innovative ideas, experiences, and best educational practices.
“University autonomy also provides opportunities for global collaboration, allowing universities to share ideas, research, and effective teaching methods, benefiting the learning process,” he stated.
He added that more autonomy would enhance operational efficiency and improve university performance, ultimately promoting high-quality education essential for national progress.
Responding to the lecture, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, praised the guest speaker during the institution’s 9th convocation ceremony.
Fasina expressed appreciation to TETFUND for its unwavering support in advancing the university’s development, despite prevailing economic difficulties.
He assured stakeholders of his administration’s dedication to enhancing and sustaining quality education at the university.
