Tinubu Administration to Train Over One Million Enugu Residents in Digital Skills

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is dedicated to training more than 1.1 million residents of Enugu in digital skills before 2027.

Mr. Tijani made this statement during a courtesy visit to Governor Peter Mbah in Enugu on Thursday, accompanied by officials from the ministry.

He explained that the training would be conducted under the National Information Technology Development Agency’s Digital Literacy for All Initiative.

According to him, this initiative is part of the federal government’s broader strategy to promote digital literacy nationwide and to ensure that citizens can efficiently use digital tools.

“We are committed to train 1,155,000 residents of Enugu state before 2027 in essential digital skills.

“Our focus will be on artisans, market women, civil servants, students, and other underserved groups,” he said.

The minister emphasized that the federal government was making substantial investments in digital infrastructure, as the full realization of a digital economy depended on it.

Mr. Tijani revealed that the ministry had received no fewer than 14,000 applications from Enugu residents through its 3MTT Programme.

He stated that 1,762 individuals had already been trained, and the ministry planned to scale up the initiative by training over 150,000 more people in Enugu alone.

Additionally, the minister announced a partnership with the Enugu government through the 774 connectivity project, aiming to provide internet access to all 17 local government secretariats in Enugu via Galaxy Backbone and NIGCOMSAT.

Mr. Tijani reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to setting up an AI regional center for the South-East at the African Regional Centre, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

“We will be establishing a joint committee, comprising representatives from the ministry and the Enugu state government, to drive the implementation of these projects,” he said.

In response, Governor Mbah reiterated his government’s dedication to leveraging the digital economy to diversify revenue sources and transform Enugu into a $30 billion economy.

He highlighted that his administration’s commitment to innovation was evident in the establishment of a Command and Control Centre, which utilizes technology to monitor and secure streets and neighborhoods through a 24/7 surveillance system.

The governor further mentioned that the state was in the final stages of finalizing a 25-year facility lease agreement with the NCC for the Digital Bridge Institute and the Digital Industrial Park.
