Tinubu changes University of Maiduguri’s name to honour former President Buhari

President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri, located in Borno State, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu made this announcement on Thursday during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, dedicated to honouring the late Nigerian leader.

“Before we take the prayers in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded), can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name—Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri?” said Tinubu.

The president’s decision follows recent calls by a group urging him to immortalise Buhari for his role in advancing the nation’s development.

Buhari was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, located in Katsina State, on Tuesday. He passed away on Sunday, July 13, in a hospital in London after a long illness.

Numerous distinguished Nigerians have paid tribute to the late president, recognising his contributions to national progress and development.
