TRCN director says 32% of teachers fail professional qualifying exam

A total of 4,169 teachers from different parts of the country were unsuccessful in the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) administered by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
This examination was held between May 15 and May 17.
The Director of Certification and Licensing at TRCN, Dr. Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, made this known in a statement issued yesterday while revealing the outcome of the nationwide test.
According to Ezeahurukwe, 13,782 candidates had registered for the exam, but only 12,874 — which accounts for 93.4 per cent — actually participated, while 908 candidates, or 6.6 per cent, did not attend.
Out of those who sat for the test, 8,705 candidates — making up 67.62 per cent — succeeded, while 4,169 candidates, or 32.38 per cent, did not meet the pass mark.
Based on the results, Lagos State topped the list with a strong 80 per cent pass rate, trailed by Edo State at 73.3 per cent; Niger State at 69.2 per cent; and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at 68.3 per cent.
Ezeahurukwe mentioned that one of the major issues that affected performance was the limited digital knowledge among some teachers.
The director explained that with the new leadership of Registrar Dr. Ronke Soyombo, the TRCN has plans to introduce strategies to improve digital proficiency for teachers.
These strategies will involve offering online training in digital literacy, providing curriculum materials, and giving access to previous examination questions.
Candidates were advised by the council to view their results online through www.fron.gov.ng or www.trcnigeria.ng or to visit any TRCN state or liaison office.
The council also encouraged successful candidates to begin processing their certificates and licences, adding that the results will remain valid for one year from the date they were published.
Ezeahurukwe encouraged those who failed to work on improving their digital abilities and teaching methods as they get ready for the next examination batch taking place in November.
The director also restated the council’s dedication to promoting the advancement and career development of teachers in Nigeria.
