UI Admits 4,649 New Students

The University of Ibadan (UI) has formally welcomed a total of 4,649 fresh students into its various academic programmes for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The matriculation event, which took place on Wednesday at the International Conference Centre in Ibadan, saw university administrators, family members, and supporters gather to honour the students’ official entry into the university.
During his speech at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, revealed that 11,912 applicants had taken part in the school’s post-UTME screening, having attained at least the minimum score of 200 in the UTME. Out of these candidates, 7,017 achieved scores of 50 percent or higher, with 4,411 gaining admission via UTME and 238 admitted through Direct Entry.
Professor Adebowale extended his congratulations to the newly admitted students, encouraging them to uphold the institution’s tradition of “excellence, integrity, discipline, and resilience.” He urged them to make the most of the university’s academic and ethical support systems to secure a successful future.
In addition, Mr. Olukayode Aiyenuyo, a graduate of the university and a respected figure in industry, addressed the students, advising them to be “intentional about their growth,” while highlighting the need to balance strong ambition with good character.
He explained the difference between “being” and “doing,” pointing out that while doing relates to tasks and accomplishments, being is centred on one’s true identity and mission. “Who you choose to be is far more important than what you want to do,” he stated.
Aiyenuyo encouraged the students to “embrace diversity, pursue knowledge, and align their actions with a well-defined purpose.”
He added, “Success does not come without trying. Good grades do not come without frustration. Life is too special to be spent stressed. Learn to navigate challenges with grace.”
The matriculation ceremony represented a pivotal moment for the new students as they officially began their academic path at Nigeria’s oldest university.
