UNILAG students protest hostel fee hikes, reject eviction notices

Students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Idi-Araba campus are protesting the recent increase in hostel fees to ₦80,000 for two semesters and ₦100,000 for the entire academic year, up from ₦65,000. The hike, which violated a previous agreement, has disproportionately affected students at the College of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy.

Students protested the management’s decision, chanting slogans like “Change the memo, we no dey go,” and requested that the new fees be reversed. UNILAG administrators responded by issuing an eviction order, forcing students to leave the hostels, escalating campus tensions.

Defiant protesters have refused to leave, requesting that their demands be addressed before taking any action. Police were dispatched to the location to manage the situation, which remains tense as students demand fee reductions and a response to their complaints.

In a letter signed by Olusegun Akinnagbe, Principal Assistant Secretary of the Student Affairs Unit, non-medical graduating and undergraduate students were instructed to evacuate the hostels unless they applied for an extension owing to project defences, internships, or other valid reasons. Those who are approved to stay will be charged a prorated fee.
