UNILORIN Student Commits Suicide Over Economic Hardship

A male student in his second year at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), located in Kwara State, has allegedly taken his own life due to financial difficulties.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed, but he was a student of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS).

Reports indicate that before his tragic passing, he had a cumulative aggregate of 4.5 in his academic performance at the Department of Mass Communication.

It was further reported that the incident occurred at his private accommodation situated in the Oke-Odo area of the Tanke community in Ilorin, the capital of the state.

Individuals within the university community stated that financial struggles were the reason behind his decision to end his life.

Additional reports revealed that he had lost his father a few years ago, and since then, his mother, a retired school teacher, had been solely responsible for funding his education.

His financial difficulties reportedly began when he resumed studies last year. As a result, some of his colleagues contributed money to cover his tuition fees and provide him with food.

However, it was reported that last weekend, after his roommate had gone for lectures, he consumed a poisonous substance and left behind a note explaining that his financial struggles had driven him to commit suicide.

Upon returning from lectures, his roommate discovered the situation and raised the alarm.

A senior administrative officer from the university management, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday.

He described the event as deeply shocking and noted that it had plunged both the university community and students into mourning.
