ILORIN – Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, has urged the nation’s affluent citizens to always help the less fortunate, particularly impoverished students.
During the official cheque presentation to the 2022 scholarship beneficiaries in Ilorin on Wednesday, the vice chancellor made the announcement.
In the person of Prof. Musa Yakubu, Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ilorin, he expressed his happiness that 11 of the scholarship winners are University of Ilorin students.
He described Mr. Joseph Duntoye, the CEO of the Mojirola Educational Foundation, a blessing to humanity and a model for others to follow.
“We need more people like the donor to support our youth, especially in the area of education, given the current state of the nation’s economy.
“Education is the best legacy that can be bequeathed to children and youths,” he said.
The project coordinator, Dr. Ruth Abiola Adimula, reported that in 2021, approximately 15 students from different tertiary institutions received N200,000 apiece as a result of the programme.
Adimula, a senior lecturer at the university’s Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, clarified that in 2023, N150,000 was the only payment made to each of the 20 recipients.
She clarified that the charitable initiative, which was started the previous year, was designed to serve kids from Oro town, Igbominaland, as well as the entire state.
“The award is usually given to indigent students who are either on First Class or Second Class Upper Division in their various courses of study,” she said.
Mr. Jamiu Ridwan, a 500 Level student at the University of Ilorin’s Faculty of Law, responded on behalf of the other recipients and thanked the donor for institutionalising the scholarship programme.
