UniPort Grieves Loss of Student in Off-Campus Shooting Incident

The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has expressed profound grief over the passing of a 300-level computer science student, Mr. Godwin Francis Akpakpan, who was reportedly shot and killed in a tragic incident that occurred off-campus and involved security forces.

In a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, the university affirmed that the event took place outside its campus and extended sympathy to the late student’s family, friends, and fellow students.

The details leading to Akpakpan’s death are still uncertain, though the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised concerns about what it described as an “alleged murder” during a law enforcement operation.

NANS reported that Akpakpan had been taken into custody during a stop-and-search operation on April 16, 2024, by individuals dressed in police uniforms. He was later shot and killed during what was reported as a clash between police officers and men in military clothing.

The Chairman of NANS Rivers State Joint Campus Council, Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, strongly condemned the situation and pointed out that no security agency has taken accountability for the shot that claimed Akpakpan’s life.

“We demand an immediate and transparent investigation into this killing,” Chinonso said. “If the authorities fail to act, we will not hesitate to occupy the streets and shut down campuses across Rivers State.”

The student organization stressed that protecting students’ lives is non-negotiable and vowed to persist until justice is achieved.

At the same time, the university’s administration stated that it is collaborating with relevant law enforcement bodies to uncover the truth behind the tragedy and has promised to back any effort that ensures justice is done.

“We expect a thorough investigation and the necessary actions to follow, in line with justice and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The university called on students and staff to stay calm and allow the authorities to handle the investigation properly. It reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the rights, welfare, and security of everyone in the university community.
