Victoria University of Wellington 2025 Undergraduate Scholarship for International Students

The Athol Mann Award for Classical Voice was created in 2018 through a generous bequest from Athol Mann, reflecting his deep love for opera and dedication to students studying classical voice.

The late Emeritus Professor Athol Mann, a well-known figure in Wellington and a former Dean of the institution now called the Wellington School of Business and Government, made a lasting impact at Victoria University of Wellington.

Although his professional path was in accounting, Athol had initially intended to study history and maintained a lifelong passion for the arts.

He was raised in a family that valued music and discovered his enthusiasm for opera after watching a world-renowned cast perform Verdi’s Rigoletto during his teenage years in Christchurch, his hometown.

He once remarked that he had an “addiction for music the way some others have an addiction for golf.”

Requirements for Victoria University of Wellington Athol Mann Scholarship

• Applicants must be enrolled full-time at the New Zealand School of Music, majoring in Classical Voice.
• Applicants must be intending to enrol full time in their Honours year in the year following application.

Selection Criteria

This scholarship is open to current New Zealand School of Music students who are majoring in classical voice. Preference is for postgraduate students; however, undergraduate students may still apply. Selection will be based on academic merit.
