Wigwe University Holds First Matriculation Ceremony for 120 New Students

Wigwe University announced it is set to celebrate a significant milestone today, Thursday, November 14, 2024, as it hosts its inaugural matriculation ceremony.

In a statement from Dr. Sam Dede, Chairman of the Matriculation Ceremony Committee, Wigwe University confirmed that the anticipated event will be held at the Herbert Wigwe Auditorium on its campus in Isiokpo, Rivers State.

At the university’s official opening on October 17, Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, had expressed optimism that the new private institution would greatly contribute to the state’s development. He also urged the administration to fulfil the late founder Herbert Wigwe’s vision for the university.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma, Governor Fubara pledged that the state government would continue to invest in both the university and education within Rivers State. He also announced that the government had secured 100 scholarship slots, with 70 reserved for state indigenes and 30 for non-indigenes.

In a press statement in Port Harcourt, Dede shared that “the ceremony will officially induct nearly 120 pioneering students into the university, symbolising the commencement of a new era for higher education in Africa. As the first cohort of students to matriculate, these individuals will play a pivotal role in embodying Wigwe University’s mission to train the next generation of fearless, innovative, and thoughtful leaders on the continent.”

The ceremony will feature a keynote address by the Emir of Kano, His Highness, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Dede added, “The event will be graced by a host of dignitaries, including the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, who is the Special Guest of Honour. Other notable guests from across the state and beyond will join the occasion to celebrate this landmark achievement in higher education.”
