Yaba College of Technology has enrolled a total of 8,202 candidates who have been admitted to the institution for the 2023/2024 academic session to study various courses.
The number admitted was out of 21,530 students who applied for admission.
The Rector, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul revealed these data during the college’s 2023/2024 academic session matriculation ceremony.
He stated that a total of one thousand, three hundred and thirty-five (1,335) individuals applied for the Bachelor of Science (B. Sc (Ed) Education programs of the college in affiliation with the Nigeria University, Nsukka and only Five hundred and seven (507) candidates were offered admission to the School of Technical Education.
According to him, a total of five thousand six hundred and eighty-five (5,685) candidates applied for the college’s Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, but only three thousand, three hundred and forty-two (3,342) were admitted.
He elaborated that at the National Diploma (ND) level, a total of fourteen thousand five hundred and ten (14,510) applicants applied for admission, while four thousand, three hundred and fifty-three (4,353) candidates were admitted having been found successful in the Mandatory Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the screening conducted by the College to further ascertain and strengthen the quality of candidates being admitted to the school .
Dr. Abdul admonished the students ‘As you step through the doors of this institution, you are not just students; you are future leaders, innovators, and change-makers. The journey that you are about to undertake will be filled with challenges and triumphs, and it is a journey that will shape not only your academic and professional lives but also your character and values’’.
Here in Yaba College of Technology, he said, ‘’We pride ourselves on fostering an environment that encourages innovation, critical thinking, and creativity and you will be surrounded by distinguished Lecturers who are not only experts in their fields but also passionate about nurturing the next generation of scholars. You are encouraged to engage with them, ask questions, and make the most out of the resources available to you’’.
The Rector clarified that in the College, 75% lecture attendance is a prerequisite for students to write an examination at the conclusion of the semester, and any student who fails to achieve the mandatory criterion will be denied admission to the examination. You are consequently encouraged to attend lectures on a regular basis in order to qualify for the written examination.
Professor ‘Funso Isolaowa Afolabi, chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, advised matriculants in his presentation to take full advantage of the resources available to them, participate in academic and extracurricular activities, seek assistance, and collaborate with their peers.
He reminded the children that education is more than just the classroom; it is strengthened by their experiences, conversations, and exploration outside of textbooks.
He emphasised the significance of values, integrity, respect, and responsibility as the foundation for being not only successful professionals but also responsible Nigerian citizens. Adding that as they grow and learn, they should let these principles guide their actions and decisions.
Professor Afolabi thanked the parents and guardians in attendance for their unwavering support and belief in their children.
The chairman appealed to the new students once again to face the challenges ahead with courage and confidence, acknowledging that there would be difficult times, but to always remember that every challenge is an opportunity for progress.
He insisted that the students should draw on the strength of the college community and know that they are never alone on their journey.
