LAGOS (Sundiata Scholar) – The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, says the institution has zero tolerance to sexual harassment of any form within the campus.
Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the institution made this known at the monthly executive management meeting held on Friday with the union leaders at the Council Chamber, Ikorodu Campus, Lagos.The VC stated that the institution was committed to create a safe and conducive environment for all stakeholders.
Odusanya added that the institution would not condone any behaviour that compromised the safety and well-being of their students and staff members.“Various studies in Nigeria show that almost half of university students have experienced sexual violence.“Sexual harassment is a scourge that must be eradicated from our campuses.“
Common forms of sexual harassment include, insensitive sexual jokes, brushing of body parts in an unwelcome manner, and persistent demands for sex by lecturers and students,” he said.
Odusanya, however, outlined the university’s policy statement on sexual harassment.
He said the policy includes, “continuous sensitisation of the university community, zero tolerance to sexual harassment, prompt and confidential investigation of complaints.“Others are, administrative action, sanction, remedy and encouragement of high ethical standards”.
He, however, revealed that a complaint process is being established and urged all stakeholders to prevent, report, and abstain from sexual harassment.“Let us work together to create a culture of respect and dignity,” he said. (NAN)
