The Chief Magistrate Court 3 in Yola, Adamawa State, has ordered a college registrar to pay N1 million in damages to a married female lecturer who he slapped.
Musa Chiroma, Acting Registrar of the College for Legal Studies in Yola, was dismissed by the court after paying N1 million in damages to Mrs. Fadimatu Musa, the lecturer.
Aside from the N1 million in damages and an extra N80,000 for prosecution costs, the acting registrar was also ordered to provide a written apology and undertaking not to victimise or assault the complainant again.
The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Uwani Danladi, accepted the fulfilment of these orders that the matter was struck out, and the defendant was discharged.
On May 13, 2024, the acting registrar was first charged with assault, criminal force to deter a public official from carrying out her lawful duties, and voluntarily causing harm, all in violation of sections 244 and 219 of the Penal Law of 2018.
According to the First Information Report, Chiroma assaulted the Assistant Chief Lecturer on April 15, 2024, who also served as the Chairman of the institution’s Task Force Committee for the Enforcement of School Fee Payment.
He was said to have attacked Fadimatu because she prohibited a student from taking an exam due to his failure to pay the required fees.
During the resumed court proceedings, Inspector Abubakar Nurudeen appeared for the prosecution and S. N. Agaecheta represented the defendant, while the Head of the Public Sector Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association Women Forum, Mrs. Fatima Bello Raji, was present to ensure justice.
