Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has donated N60 million to Peter University and the School of Nursing in Adazi-Nnukwu, Anambra State.
Out of this donation, N50 million is allocated to Peter University, while the remaining N10 million is for the School of Nursing in Adazi-Nnukwu.
This contribution underscores Obi’s dedication to enhancing educational institutions within the community.
Presenting the donation at Peter University, located in Achina/Onneh, Obi highlighted the transformative impact of quality education as a foundation for national progress.
He encouraged students to strive for academic excellence, noting that “investment in the education sector is an investment in the future.”
Obi described education as the “most impactful tool for societal progress,” urging students to envision themselves as future leaders who can drive positive change.
At the School of Nursing in Adazi-Nnukwu, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to supporting institutions that cultivate skill, professionalism, and character.
Commenting on the trend of skilled nurses seeking better opportunities abroad, he encouraged those who leave to eventually return to contribute to a reformed Nigeria, assuring them that he and others share a vision to realise this change.
For those staying, he expressed hope that their talents would contribute to the nation’s development.
In response, Bishop Paulinus Ezeokafor, a prominent figure in both the university and nursing college (along with Peter Cardinal Okpaleke), expressed sincere gratitude to Obi for his enduring commitment to education.
Calling him the “Father of Education” in Anambra, Ezeokafor praised Obi’s pivotal role in transforming education across the state, notably by returning schools to church oversight—a decision that revitalised infrastructure and academic standards.
Ezeokafor noted, “What is intriguing about Obi is that he has sustained his support to institutions even after leaving office as Governor,” emphasising that Obi’s dedication stems from a genuine desire to uplift society.
Peter University’s Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Umezinwa, also commended Obi for his continuous support, particularly for his funding of the university’s entrepreneurship centre, which aims to provide students with practical skills for self-reliance and innovation.
Accompanying Obi on the visit was his former Chief of Staff, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, showcasing their strong partnership in advancing education and community development within Anambra State.
