The Jigawa State College of Education has begun the payment of outstanding allowances owed to its casual workers.
The payment, totalling ₦17,028,000, was approved by the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi.
According to the registrar of the college, Mr. Bala Isyaku, the amount has been disbursed to 203 eligible casual workers through online transfers via UBA Bank.
The payment process, which started on Friday, October 22, 2024, followed a thorough screening exercise conducted by the college’s management staff under the supervision of the College Council.
The registrar explained that the exercise was necessary to confirm the eligibility of the casual workers for the payment.
The provost of the college, Professor Nura Muhammad Ringim, expressed his gratitude to Governor Namadi for prioritising the welfare of workers and his dedication to improving the education sector.
“The governor’s commitment to addressing these long-standing issues is a testament to his passion for transforming education and enhancing the well-being of workers in Jigawa State,” remarked Professor Ringim.
The statement issued by the Registrar also highlighted the governor’s efforts to alleviate the struggles faced by the casual workers, whose services were discontinued in 2023.
“The payment is expected to bring relief to the affected workers and their families,” it read.
Mr Isyaku commended the governor’s efforts, noting that the payment would significantly support the workers. He also urged them to continue supporting the college in its mission to provide quality education.
“The payment of outstanding allowances to casual workers is part of Governor Namadi’s efforts to improve the welfare of workers in the state.
The governor has been committed to addressing the challenges faced by workers in the state, including the payment of outstanding allowances and salaries,” he added.
The Registrar further noted that the Jigawa State College of Education has been actively working to enhance its infrastructure and create a conducive learning environment for its students.
He emphasised that the college is collaborating closely with the state government to resolve the challenges faced by its workforce.
Additionally, he called on the 14 individuals on the approved list who have not yet attended the screening to visit the college for verification to receive their entitlements.
